Introducing the Susan Hauptman Gallery at BrightWorks Forest Cove
Susan Hauptman (1947-2015) was an American artist known for her charcoal and pastel works on paper. She is best remembered for her stark, enigmatic self-portraits rendered with precise, candid detail. Her work is collected by major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
Susan Hauptman’s art passion drove her to work 12-hour days and six-day weeks. She held the Lamar Dodd Professorial Chair at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, and was a visiting artist at Harvard University, the University of California at Davis, the San Francisco Art Institute and many other institutions. Susan Hauptman’s art continues to influence creators who value detail, depth, and emotional clarity. Her legacy adds a sense of inspiration and focus to the BrightWorks Forest Cove community.
